What WEN Flavor are you? How to choose the right formulation.

I have tried all the WEN Cleansing Conditioner formulations as of today! I've been getting a set from QVC that came with the original 5 "flavors" as the WEN die hards like to call them.  I just got a new kit that included the brand new Pomegranate and I predict it's going to be my new fave.

So how the heck do you pick from the now 6 different formulations? It all depends on your hair type: texture & current condition.

  • Sweet Almond Mint: This is the universal flavor and works for all hair types. Personally, it's my least favorite for my fine, long hair, zero texture stick straight hair that I don't have a ton of without my extensions. I think it's better for medium thick hair and naturally wavy to curly that is in good condition and doesn't need a ton of extra moisture.
  • Tea Tree: This is one of my faves! It's perfect for those with dry, sensitie, flaky scalp issues and thinning hair. My scalp is drier vs oily which helps me to go an extra day without cleansing but I also experience occasionally dry & itchy scalp especially if i'm blow drying my hair a lot or depending on the weather/humidity.
  • Fig:  This one is the most rich and hydrating and is best for medium to coarse, wavy to curly and ethnic hair. If your hair is dry, dehydrated or damaged this one will be your BFF.  Brazilian blow out/ Keratin straightening girls this one is great to re-hydrate your hair. And for those of you even with super fine, straight hair this one is great to use just on the ends. It rejuvenates fried hair from hair appliances...trust me, I know!
  • Cumcumber Aloe: Clarifying cleanser for all hair types and beneficial for oily scalps and dry hair. It's lighter than the Sweet Almond Mint but slightly richer than Lavendar.  **Workout addicts this is the one I use after a sweat drenched Turbo Kick workout! Love it!
  • Lavender:  Universal Cleanser for all hair types but especially for fine to medium. I find it's the lightest of the bunch and most volumizing. Love the spa-like Lavender essential oil-type scent. My whole bathroom smells like the finest day spa after I use this one.
  • Pomegranate: This is the baby of the group and the newest to join the WEN crew. It's a universal formula that is richer than Cucumber Aloe but doesn't leave hair feeling weighed down. I'm definitely going to be ordering this one in the gallon size as soon as it's offered.

More usage tips:

  • It bears repeating because this is where most people go wrong with WEN. Say it with me....More is MORE. Don't skimp on your pumps. The longer and thicker your hair the more pumps you need. See previous blog for the deets!
  • Mix and match your WEN. Some days you need more clarifying, like on the days you workout and get your hair extra sweaty. Some days it feels really fried from lots of flat iron or curling iron action. Basically, your hair needs may vary from day to day, or week to week. That's why I love the kits that come with a few of each.  I like to use certain ones at the scalp like Cucumber Melon or Lavendar at the root and Fig at the ends where I need more hydration.  Play around and find out what combo works best for you!
  • Squeaky clean hair doesn't mean clean hair. I know we're all so used to traditional shampoos that get super sudsy but that squeaky clean feeling really means hair is stripped. It does getting used to so you don't have to give up your shampoo entirely. You can still go back to it whenever you feel like you have build up. Try using more WEN before giving up. 90% of the time that will work! More is more!
  • Did you know WEN is great for kids and pets! Sulfates are not our friends. That's why you can't use bubble bath for children under the age of 3. Sulfates are detergents that makes the bubbles and suds but it also is a common skin irritant and strips hair/skin of natural oils and conditioners. Chaz Dean, the creator of WEN is a huge animal lover and has 3 labs of his own. They all use WEN!

My tips on how to use WEN Conditioning Cleansers!

If you have hair you must try WEN. It's as simple as that!  It works on all hair types, textures and lengths.  There's a formula, or two or three that's perfect for you!  I've been using WEN for over 4 years now and it has not only made it possble for me to grow my hair longer, healthier, shinier but the biggest change is that it saves my color job!  If you're like me and you go to a salon to get your color and hi-lights done you know it's a long and expensive process.  I also have naturally dark brown hair and in the spring and summer I go several shades lighter and add dark caramel hi-lights which can go very brassy with the wrong shampoo/conditioners.

WEN is a conditioner only method to cleansing your hair. It's sulfate-free so first time users will notice immediately that there's no foaming or suds like you get with most traditional shampoos.  This is a very good thing though!  Google Sodium Laurel Sulfates (http://bit.ly/dPuRoX) and you'll find that it's a very common ingredient that is also quite controversial. It's a cheap detergent that is found in many household products. Without getting into a debate on whether or not it's linked to cancer (do your own research to make your own informed decision), it's at the very least, the culprit that causes skin/scalp irritation and ruins hair color.

WEN is a different concept so here are my tips to make it work for you:

  • Rinse hair thoroughly and make sure it's very wet from root to tip before adding the WEN.
  • More is more with WEN! This is where new users skimp and don't get the FAB results.
  • Use a minimum of 8 pumps to the crown section, 8 pumps to the nape section and 8 pumps on the right and left sides. If your hair is longer than shoulder length and/or you have textured hair (anything other than straight) you'll need to add more pumps through the ends. For example, I have fine hair with no texture but it's long & hits the bottom of my shoulder blade.  I use approximately 30 pumps.  Sounds like a lot but when you see 30 pumps dispensed it's not.
  • Thoroughly massage the WEN into your hair with your finger tips (never finger nails) especially at the roots and work your way down to the tips.  I spend approximately 3 minutes on this part. If you have long hair I highly recommend using a wide tooth comb (they make them with a little hook to keep in the shower). Comb through and then pile up hair at the top of your head and do everything else you need to do, (exfoliate, shave, etc). The longer you leave WEN in your hair the better!
  • The most important final step is to rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse some more. I used to have a rain forest shower head. While it was nice and relaxing it didn't help to rinse out all my conditioner. WEN has a lot of silicone in it which helps to make hair feel silky and look shiny but it can be tough to rinse.
  • You can also use WEN as a leave in conditioner which works especially well if your hair tends to tangle easily, you have textured or curly hair. I also love to use it as a hair mask and let it marinate for as long as possible, even over night.
  •  ==> If you find that your hair looks limp or dirty after using WEN for about a week it's okay to use your regular shampoo.  Most likely this is caused because you're not using enough of the product and not rinsing it completely.  But sometimes you just need extra clarifying especially if you use a lot of waxes, pomades and other silicone-heavy products. For some people WEN works best if they use a regular shampoo every 3rd or 4th time or use WEN only as a conditioner or mask.  Trust me, the WEN police will not come and take you away!
